April is ACC and Autism Acceptance and Awareness Month
April is ACC and Autism Acceeptance Awareness Month

April is AAC and Autism Acceptance and Awareness Month. The goal is to raise awareness about Autism and Augmentative and Alternative Communication

AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. AAC includes sign language, low-tech picture boards, and high-tech communication apps put onto iPads or other devices. There are AAC devices that allow individuals to communicate primarily using eye gaze! AAC can be used for anyone from babies to adults
PE has students who utilize these AAC devices throughout the school day. We also have two autistic support classrooms available to our students and families
Philipsburg Elementary celebrated throughout this month with activities for all students and teachers. Mrs. Twigg (Speech Pathologist), Mrs. Sipes (Autistic Support Instructor), and Mrs. Beardsley (Autistic Support Instructor) developed "Watch it Wednesdays" to watch videos and read books to learn about Autism and "Finger Spell Fridays" in which students learned about sign language and how to spell and say various words
There was a challenge for all teachers this month to learn how to use AAC devices. Teachers were asked to develop sentences and identify how to use the devices. The quickest K-2 teacher, Mrs. Croyle, and the quickest 3-5 teacher, Mrs. Yost competed against Mr. Fye at our Monthly Reward Assembly
We want to thank Mrs. Twigg, Mrs. Sipes, Mrs. Beardsley, and all of the students, faculty, staff, and families who put these events together, participated in them, and support what we provide for our students!
